Soma Cube is now available on Steam
My full build of Soma Cube passed Steam review and is now available!
The full game
The free demo has 12 puzzles and the full game has 36. It also includes Steam Cloud saves, achievements, and leaderboards, so you can keep your progress between PCs and compare your results with other players.
Preparing the final build, including Steam integration, took about as long as making the game itself. Steam is not especially easy the first time around. I have also improved the game since the first demo, most notably by adding the option to rotate the plinth and its puzzle1.
You can read more about the development of Soma Cube in an older post. This is my first game on Steam, and I am still learning game development. Not using any 3D assets made it quick to build. It is just cubes, after all :)
Steam
The Steam release process was longer and more tedious than I expected, so I am glad I tried it with a small game. My first submission was rejected because I had not supplied grayscale icons for locked achievements. The dashboard made it look as if Steam would generate them from the coloured icons when left blank, but it did not. Lesson learned, and the resubmission delayed the release by another week because it needed another review.
You can buy the full game below, wishlist it for later, or try the free demo with 12 puzzles.
An unexpected playtest review
I was pleasantly surprised to be notified about a Soma Cube playtest on YouTube . I had not contacted the channel; they found the game through my Reddit post and decided to review it themselves.
What is next
Over the coming months, I plan to add more puzzles and improve the 3D controls. My main priority is making each tile’s position easier to read. With an orthographic camera, it can be hard to tell whether a tile is higher or simply farther away.
